Every year, a good number of dog will go through the ordeal of having some skin allergies. You may sometimes ask yourself how to determine whether or not your dog is allergic to something.  The fact is if your dog keeps scratching all the time, he may have an allergy of a hot spot.

Allergic dogs usually spend most of their time scratching their body and licking their paws. Spending time scratching their ears can also lead to ear infection. There are a variety of causes of dog skin allergies.

1. Fleas

Bites by fleas can get a dog break out in flaky rash. You should take your dog to the vet as soon as you notice anything like that.
The vet will then administer a shot that will calm the rash and reduce the pain caused by the bite. It’s important to immediately treat those cases, otherwise the dog may lose their coat. You will have to pay very close attention to make sure your dog is not attacked by flea.

2. Food Allergies

You may not know but your dog may be consuming something they are allergic to. If  you know you’ve done everything possible to prevent flea allergy, the next thing will be to try a different food to see how they react to it. Choose the kind of food that has ingredient different from the previous one. Be careful not to share the food that is supposed to be eaten by humans with the dog. Human food (especially canned food) can contain some additives that may not be good for the dog, causing the allergy.

3.Pollen

Air born substances can have an allergic effect on certain dogs. Watch out for pollen, molds and other air born substances. The seasons can be very determining when it comes to air born related allergies. A huge amount of pollen is usually released during the spring while the fall is usually synonym to mold and decaying leaves. If your dog has those type of seasonal allergies you will have to use some dishwashing detergent to wash it off the dog before washing them with their own shampoo.

4. Household Chemicals

Dogs can also be allergic to household chemicals. It is always better to use organic cleaning agents at home as they have less potential to cause allergies both to the dog and also humans.

The dog shampoo you choose may also not be right for the dog.  Each dog being very unique nobody knows which shampoo is better, you will have to try yourself the different ones in the market and see which one is better for your dog, its a trial and error thing. The advice is to usually try natural once first.

There have been cases where adding up different type of flea preventative has ended up in an allergic reaction. Consult your doctor if that is the case.

If you noticed any form of allergy that causes heavy breathing and severe reactions in the dog then you need to consult a doctor as soon as possible.

So, basically, it is important to pay attention to signs of allergies in your dog. They can come in the form of itching or in the form of rashes. The dogs eyes can water and itch. In case your dog show difficulty breathing you should see a vet as soon as possible.

  1. Hi, great info to know, especially if you own a dog, which I do. For the past few weeks, mine has been starting to scratch, and as you noted in your post, could be from fleas (even though she has a monthly flea treatment) or even airborne (pollen, etc.) allergies, which is quite common here in Oklahoma. Thanks for sharing the info ;-) Christine

  6. Loic,
You have just brought up an issue I have with my 4.5 lb. Toy Poodle. She takes flea meds regularly, but has begun scratching at her ears and licking her paws. The last time I gave her flea meds she threw up about two hours later, so I’m not sure the medication had enough time to fully infiltrate her system.

Looking forward to reading your ebook. Thanks!

  9. Our dog will be 14 in December. Fleas can make a dog so miserable! I like to use Capstar on her if she has just a few. When you have a dog, you have to pay close attention to their health.

Thank you for caring about dogs and informing us on how to better take care of them.
