Dog flea are very common during the spring and summer. It is usually a big  challenge for a lot of dog owner to get rid of those fleas as they keep reproducing and spreading on your dog over and over. The question becomes: what is the right flea treatment to apply?

Here is how fleas spread around your house.  You probably found them on your dog first. They will spend their time on your dog skin, drinking his blood. Then the female adult fleas will start laying eggs.  After a few days to some few weeks, some of the eggs found on your dog’s skin will spread around as your dog will start scratching himself, moving and playing around your house.  Some of the eggs will definitely fall of the dog and end up on your carpets, furniture, curtains, and bedding.  So if you don’t mind having your dog on your bed, take note of that. The funny thing is a lot of people sleeping with their dogs just have no idea  they are are sleeping with flea eggs around.

It is sometimes hard for dog owners to acknowledge the fact that their beloved dog is infested with fleas. Most dog owners do not even take their time to look hard enough for tiny little pest hidden inside the dog’s fur until full infestation occur. Make sure you always take precautionary measures. As you know, prevention is always better than cure.  It is important to use flea combs after you bathed your dog. This can get as much flea out of your dog’s fur.  It also gives you and assessment on whether the bath was as effective as wanted. After combing, just clean the comb with a piece of paper towel and if you see dark brownish red spots, you can start thinking there are still fleas left on your dog’s skin. The reddish spots are actually telling you that fleas have been drinking your dog’s blood.

Above, i  have giving your an idea of how flea spread in your house. It is important to understand the life cycle of fleas if you want to fight them back. Females fleas usually lay eggs between 25 to 50 a day.  The incubation period varies from 7 days to 2 years. In other words it is not surprising that just 7 days after a small number of  fleas are found in your dog you end up seeing your dog infested with fleas. The solution to stop this annoying problem is  effective use of dog flea treatment.

Do not rely only on spot treatment for your dog as the only solution to the problem. Fleas spread around your house so, look around your home,  observe your dog, where does he often go, where does he usually like playing, what kind of company does he keep.

Let’s take an example. If you have observed that your favorite pet enjoys playing with strays in open yards, it is up to you to make sure the playing environment is cleaned and free of pests.  If your dog has a favorite carpet he usually lies on at his leisure time, make sure you thoroughly wash then in hot water then dry them up for very long period. This help kill not just the fleas in it but also the eggs and larvae.

It is also recommended that you clean your home environment on daily basis  with a powerful HEPA vacuum cleaner and steam mop.  It is best if you take your time to clean every furniture and upholstery, just to make sure that any item your dog has come in touch with is free of any flea. When we say cleaning, it includes all bedrooms, the basement, attic, patio and even the deck furniture.

Now, there is one more thing you need to remember. That is cleaning your car too. A lot of people forget to do  that. Pet owners usually don’t mind taking their dog out for a ride. For that reason your car is probably hosting some fleas here and there. Make sure you do clean the whole environment, all the cleaning steps are important. Forgetting just one step or leaving out just one area uncleaned and that is it,  your plan has failed, fleas will come back in just a few days.

Always remember, you need to clean, clean and clean. So far as there are animals in your house, you will have to make sure the environment they live in is clean so as to keep flea infestation almost impossible.

Boy … we once had a really bad flea attack! We had to get flea bombs, and clean and oh it was a mess. We now use the flea repellent for the dogs and works well. It’s chemical though… but we stay on top of it now – closely! Thanks for the informative article!

Still get the occasional fleas (although don’t see them on my cat & dog) know that they’re still here b/c I’ll get a bite (me!) every now and then. Thanks for providing this info. I’ve had this issue in the past and it can really be a gnarly one. I used to use flea bombs but never really felt terribly great about using them. Stated using the drops from the vet and that seemed to do the trick but was a bit pricey.
